Sometimes it's a friendship meter, and sometimes it's a love meter that last one comes up less often for Itsuki (resident Ho Yay character) than the girls, but it still appears from time to time. In one of the Haruhi Suzumiya video games, where you play as Kyon, you can gain or lose favor with each character depending on how much attention you pay to them.
